To enjoy the trip, I should remember to...
1. Relax and appreciate the sights,
sounds, smells, tastes and touch of the Vietnamese culture, history, people
and custom.
2. Drink bottled water instead of drinking directly from the tap. If I have
no choice but to drink from the tap, I need to make sure that the water has
first been boiled.
3. Bring warm clothes during the winter season (December to March). North Vietnam
has 4 seasons and I would not want to freeze in the cold (5 - 15 deg).
4. Change money from an authorized agent (e.g. bank). Unauthorized agents roam
around the streets and bug the tourists to change money with them.
5. Cross the road slowly and do not dash across. When the cars and motorcycles
see me walking slowly across, they will go around me.
6. Smile at the cyclos and say "no" politely if I don't want to use their service.
It is better to say "no" than to say "later" because they will remember and
follow you throughout the day.
7. Dress politely especially when I am entering the Ho Chi Minh complex or religious
sites. Polite dressing means knee length trousers or skirts and sleeved shirt
or blouse.
8. Watch out for my belongings, especially when I am in crowded places. The
pickpockets in Vietnam are infamous for their skills in stripping the valuables
off tourists.
9. Ask permission before taking any photographs, especially in the areas where
there are ethnic minority peoples.
10. Bargain, bargain & BARGAIN whenever I do my shopping!
